Security Incident Investigation & Response
Sanitized case study — client details withheld for confidentiality.
The ask.
The client detected signs of unauthorized access and needed rapid, structured investigation — not just "is it contained," but a defensible, full timeline reconstruction they could use for both remediation and any downstream disclosure obligations.
Approach.
We treated this as a formal digital forensics engagement: preserving evidence integrity from the first indication, then working backward through available logs, endpoint artifacts, authentication records, and network telemetry to reconstruct exactly what happened, when, and how.
Initial indication
Triaged the anomaly that first surfaced (an unusual authentication pattern) to confirm scope before any containment actions that might destroy volatile evidence.
Investigation
Cross-referenced authentication logs, endpoint activity, and network flow data to identify the initial access vector and every subsequent action taken by the intruder.
Timeline reconstruction
Built a minute-by-minute timeline from first unauthorized access through to detection, establishing dwell time and exactly which systems and data were touched.
Root cause determination
Traced the incident back to its actual origin (rather than stopping at the symptom that triggered detection), identifying the specific control gap that allowed initial access.
What we found.
The investigation identified the true initial access vector, distinguished attacker activity from normal operational noise in the logs, and — critically — determined that the scope was narrower than initially feared, which materially changed the client’s response posture and disclosure calculus.
Why it mattered.
In incident response, speed and accuracy both matter, and they’re often in tension. An incomplete timeline leads to premature "all clear" calls or unnecessarily broad disclosure. A defensible, evidence-backed reconstruction protects the client whichever direction the facts point.
Outcome.
We delivered a full incident report suitable for both internal leadership and external stakeholders (legal, insurance, and where applicable regulators), plus a hardening roadmap targeting the specific root cause identified — not just the symptom that triggered the alert.
